Central Elementary School third graders in Mr. Gary Paustian's class spent time learning all about the short double "o" and the long double "o" sounds.

Class began with a creative writing warm-up activity in which students had to write a story in their journals about a photo of a large dog biting a snowman's arm.

Following this activity, the students started concentrating on the double "o" sounds.

ML Resource Teacher Ms. Anna Peters asked the students to say and sound out a word and then they had to determine if it was a short "o" or long "o" sound.

As they moved forward in the lesson the words became even harder.

The students were given a set of words to sound out and they had to write the word in their phonics books under the short "o" or long "o" category.

Ms. Peters then wrote a word on the whiteboard and asked the students to write the same words on theirs and draw a picture showing the meaning of the word.

When they finished each word, Ms. Peters asked them to hold their boards up and one student was selected to draw their example on the board for all of the students to see.
