Making Music with Recorders
Central Elementary School fifth graders in Ms. Katie Tran's music class are learning how to play the recorder in the treble clef.
The students started class reviewing musical notes by playing a short game on the musical programs Quaver and MusicPlay.
Ms. Tran then had them practice blowing air on their hands.
Ms. Tran said there are a lot of things that the students have to remember when playing the recorder, such as focusing on making sure the holes are covered, saying a silent "too" to articulate rhythms and blowing correctly into the recorder.
As they played each section of a song, Ms. Tran gave them feedback and pointers on what they could do to improve.
The students were introduced to the song "Hot Cross Buns." Ms. Tran first had them practice it by saying "Ta, Ti, Ti, Ta."
The students then played "Hot Cross Buns" together.
Ms. Tran was very impressed by their skills and was proud of what they had accomplished in class. She said the students are excited to start "Recorder Karate" soon in which they can earn "belts" when they play songs correctly!
